Students took some time this week to write an additional chapter which was not included in our book. Written in first person, as Ivan writes, my class has captured a lot of perspectives about how readers around the world must have felt as they closed this wonderful book. Final Chapter
As we finished reading The One and Only Ivan, all of us were eager to hear what would happen to Ivan. We wanted to know how he would do with his new friends, and how he would see his old friends. Students took some time this week to write an additional chapter which was not included in our book. Written in first person, as Ivan writes, my class has captured a lot of perspectives about how readers around the world must have felt as they closed this wonderful book. Below in the comments, are the final chapters which my students have written.

Meet and Greet
ReplyDeleteToday Julia came with a heavy plastic bag. She walked to Maya’s office. I wonder what is Julia giving to Maya? I thought, I couldn’t think of anything. They talked and talked. It looked as if they were arguing. Finally Maya nodded uneasily. Julia walked out of the office happily. She was walking to me. Suddenly the bag didn’t look so heavy in Julia’s hands. Julia dropped the bag in front of my feet. I could see a white lid covering a whole jar of red paint. Julia looked proud when she saw me do my funky gorilla dance.
After Julia left a man came, holding two signs saying R-U-B-Y and the other sign said I-V-A-N. The man hammered the sign with R-U-B-Y on Ruby’s domain. The man waved, Ruby replied by patting his trunk with a playful smile. Who was this? I know Ruby wouldn’t trust anyone new. Then the man came to me. He looked up at me and said “Hey there big guy!” It was George. I did a little bit of my funky gorilla dance. George smiled.
When there were no visitors in the zoo, Maya came to check on me. This was my chance. I took my paint and wrote on the cement floor: R-U-B-Y. I tried to copy Ruby’s billboard. Maya read my word slowly. She gave me an uneasy look. “Is this what you want?” Maya said as she unlocked my cage. She held me tightly by my arm. We started walking to Ruby’s domain. Ruby was just about to fall asleep until I said “Ruby.” I looked at Ruby. Ruby looked at me. Maya looked at both of us. Ruby and I stared at each other.
I’m back in my domain. Can’t wait for tomorrow! I’ll use my paint even more.
I, Ivan, the one and only Ivan,mighty silverback, has just found a new home.
Bob comes back with Julia. This time he is on this thingy called a leash

“It’s kinda both” Bob says
“What's the other rope thingy around your neck?”
“A collar”
“And the metal things?”
“tags” “they say: Bob. If found please return to 8695 busy drive”
“8695 busy drive?”
“my home”
“I miss the old Bob.”
“cats have 9 lives, but dogs have at least 2 lives and this is my second life.” Bob says with a smile
then Julia came and untied Bob’s ‘leash’ and said with a smile
“come on you nut we have to go home”

I climbed to the top of the tree to see what Ruby was up to.
Ruby was playing. Julia comes in and yells, “Ruby!”
Ruby turns. She starts looking for who called her.
“Its me again I am over here.” Julia whispered loudly. Ruby finds who called her.
“I have a surprise for you. There is a new elephant coming in tomorrow.”
“And her name is Stella”
Ruby looked so happy. then she pauses with a worried look on her face.
What if the new Stella is mean, what if she is a bully, what if -
“Ruby,” Julia interrupts Ruby’s thoughts. “Are you excited?! She turns away.
The next day Maya gets all the animals together and she announces
“I would like to introduce you all to our new elephant...STELLA!!!
I was so excited!!! With all the animals there I struggled to look for Ruby.
Suddenly I spotted her, but I was so confused, why did Ruby’s face look worried?
Didn't Ruby like Stella before?
But when Stella came out everybody shouted, “HOORAY!!”
It was no ordinary Stella it was new Stella.
Who looked nice and Ruby did not have A worried face.
It was like a new and improved Stella!
Health
ReplyDeleteThe next day Kinyami comes to me. I wonder why she is here. Then she Approaches me slowly. I act brave. Then she touches Me. She puts her hand on my shoulder.
She runs away. "I've played this game," I whisper to myself. Then I see my sister again. She runs the same way as Kinyami. I charge forward at full speed. Then I pause. I look at Kinyami. She is hurt. I beat my chest as loud as Possible.
Maya hears me. she rushes Quickly and looks at Kinyami. She rushes to a crate. She picks up a handle. Then she talks for a while. After a few minutes. A big white truck comes with a loud siren. I see a lopsided x. It is red the color of blood. Then I remember the paint Julia gave me. Then six humans come out of the truck. The humans approach Kinyami. I don't let them get to her. But I see the vet so I let them go through.
They look at the injury.2 people go back to the truck they come back with a movable bed. They take Kinyami away. Three days pass by then Kinyami comes back. The vet says "That it will have been healed in a week."
Ruby And Ivan
ReplyDeleteRemember me, Ivan. I’m a gorilla. I am in a middle of a jungle and I don’t like grass, I bet you know why. I am trying to look for some water like a water fountain, a big water fountain. After like an hour I reached a water fountain a huge water fountain it was like a pool with a huge water slide. I ran there and I saw an elephant, a baby elephant. When I saw that elephant it looked like Ruby so I tapped her and she looked at me. It was Ruby, I took a step forward and I said to her “ I love you, Ruby.” Ruby opened her eyes when I said that. Then Ruby took another step forward than all a sudden.....we kissed! After we kissed Bob came and he looked at us and he started to BARK! When he barked George and Julia came and all a sudden they fainted because they kissed. So Ruby took some water and splashed all the water on George and Ruby. They woke up and screamed!! I told them to stop screaming, then they finally stopped.

The End?
ReplyDeleteI was so happy and surprised that Julia and Bob came to see me. I also saw Ruby in a cage, she was crying. The glass wall was there so she couldn’t hear me. I think she was crying because he is lonely. I also acted like I was crying so that Julia would free me and ruby. Julia went to the zoo owner so that she could free us. She paid the owner. It worked!!! I shouted “I am free!”
We went to a helicopter to go to the jungle. There were alot of gorila. They welcomed me. There were also other elephants. I decided to stay here. Ruby also decided to stay here. Julia was crying that she was leaving me. I gave her my last hug... I was also sad. I said “Bye” to Julia. And then we lived Happily ever after.

Flames Of Death
ReplyDeleteI woke up with a start. All the other gorillas were gone. The only thing That was left for company was...Ashes. The sky was blazing. It was hot. Too hot. The zoo was aflame! The first thought that entered my mind was “Ruby!”. I ran out of the den. There, My target was the small tree that popped out of the horizon. That small tree overlooked the whole zoo. I knuckle ran up the hill I began climbing. 1,2,1,2... I reached the top of the tree in time to see Ruby burn to ashes! The ground opened. I plummeted into darkness. I began falling, falling, falling... The scene shifted. I was back in the den. I realized it was all a bad dream. Ruby was safe. A voice said behind me”Man, your a lazy sleeper!”
Next Move
ReplyDeleteJust after Julia left, Maya the zoo keeper came to me. “Do you want to be in a cage next to Ruby?” Maya asked me. I nodded because I didn't really understand.
“We have got a cage which is free and it is next to Ruby,” cheerfully began Maya “I think you will like it there.”
Because I nodded, I think she went to get some people to move me. She returned with a car and driver. They made me sit in the car, which was very comfortable. After a while, I arrived at my new cage, there I saw Ruby. Ruby looked at me.
“Ivan, Ivan,” Ruby screamed.
“Ruby, my old friend,” I shouted back.
I finally got settled in my cage. But the best of all I could visit Ruby’s cage and she could visit mine. Maya gave me some food which were apples, oranges and bananas. She also got a TV with extra speakers, she fit it on the bars. There I was with my good friend, Ruby.

In the middle of the night I woke up when I heard a noise, then I noticed they started construction in the middle of the night, why I wasn't that sure? I was so mad that I felt like I needed to get out of here.
When I woke up next day I wondered when and how I fell asleep? Then I got breakfast. Because I felt a little sick I didn't eat it. When I looked at my family they were looking at me like I hadn't noticed something. So I ignored
them. Like every morning I looked for something new, but I didn't find anything!:(
Later that morning I had this happy feeling like someone was looking at me. I saw Ruby, Ruby moved her cage! Now her cage is next to mine, everything is back to normal. The best thing was that she was allowed into my cage. I hugged her like she was my one and only Family, which was not true. For the rest of the day we played and I felt like I hadn't seen her in ages.
I am The one and only Ivan, mighty silver back.

Best treasure in the world.
I am happy, I want to run in the wild! (If you not get what I mean think what you do when you are happy, if I was you I will run and run and see the end of world!). I am happy about Ruby not being ‘ The one and only Ruby.' I like to see animals smiling. I am drawing animal’s that are smiling because they are happy.

ReplyDeleteI wish I could stay with my friends together forever. I am very happy that Ruby is free, safe and happy, with her new family, like I promised my old friend, Stella. But I wish she could see me and Ruby. And that Bob could stay with me so I wouldn't be so lonely, and help me when I need some help.

Working Hard
ReplyDeleteI was working really hard.
I missed Ruby.
When I made the big painting for Julia that said, “HOME”, it worked.
We, Ruby and myself got into a zoo.
The downfall is that we’re not together.
So, I am making another poster that will say “MEET RUBY”.
I can’t spell so many words so, I am going easy on myself.
The paints Mack gave me are here, by my side.
While I am busy painting, the other gorillas are watching me.
It took me days to finish this poster.
About 5-6 days to be exact.
My plan to get the poster to Maya is:
1. First, beating my chest to get some attention from her.
2. Then, I show her the painting.
I know this sounds weird but if humans can talk, why can’t gorillas beat their chest?
The plan worked.
I did my happy dance again!
But, she hasn’t fully gotten the message yet.
I don’t give up.
Instead I try to talk like humans.
“Try, try, try Ivan”, I say.
The next thing I see is Ruby!
I don’t know how, when or what I did!
The Best Family in The World!

I thought and thought.
When, when will I get to be with Ruby again, when?
I know what!
I started to try writing Ruby.
I tried and tried I never gave up (remember this is for Ruby.)
I made it, I wrote Ruby!! RUBY
I took the paper and I put it on the floor...
I started to growl until I heard a voice calling “ What happened, who is it, is something wrong?”
I couldn’t believe, it worked!
In Front of my eyes I saw...
Maya!!
Maya came to my cage and saw the word Ruby she told me wait, wait for me.
She came with Ruby and...
Another idea came in my head...
YAY!! my idea worked I made Maya move my cage next to Ruby and the gorilla family.
We were the best family in the world with Ruby, her friends, the gorilla family and I were the most popular family in the world.
I promised Stella, I promised...
Almost all the people came to see this awesome family.
“Thank you” Ruby whispered in my ear.
And I know it is all because of me.
I am the one and only Ivan.
The mighty silverback!!
We played together and I knew Stella is thanking me.
Ruby and all of the others were so proud everybody cheered.
We all lived like a new family!! I liked it and I can tell Ruby also did
Burning
ReplyDeleteI see flames,sunset colors. Colors of ripe mango,bright red strawberries, sour lemons and pink
peaches. I feel hot,very hot,boiling hot,screaming hot,hotter than a dragon’s breath. I run around my domain. I scream, I panic, I stop. Wait a minute, this is not acting like a mighty silverback.
I wish I could use magic to break open the glass. BAM! the glass breaks open...
I rushed out the window there stood Stella. Stella? I wondered.” Is that you? Are you a ghost? Are you alive?” I tried to stop my nonsense questions but my mouth would not budge! Finally Stella cut my sentence “Ivan” she said in her riverlike voice “Calm down big boy. We have a mission to complete” This way I felt prouder, braver, and..... Just like a mighty silverback.
We were running,stumbling,trying to run away. My nose stung and it became harder to breath. Finally some proper air....PLOP! I fell on the floor.....

Seasons after Julia gone, Mack came and call out my name, and I stopped and turn around it was Mack! he came to visit me he dropped a picture, of me in a car with Mack next to me.
Then he said for you to remember me i wanted to say I will remember you and Mack sadly walked away i turn to my new home I am a silver back with an responsibility a family.

The next day I made eye contact with Kinyani.She made eye contact back with me and touched me. Did she want to play Tag we me?
I wasn’t in the mood for it but then I remembered my sister and how she always played tag with me.So I played with her for sometime. After we were done playing tag Kinyani and Me were exhausted! We both fell on top of each other.
After that I saw someone looking through the window. It was Mack! At first I just ignored him but he staring at me. So I finally walked up to the window and then he mumbled something. I could not figuire out what he was saying but then he spoke up a little more and he said, “Hey buddy how do you like your new place?”
I gave him a huge smile and he gave a huge smile back.
